The circumpolar star collection
The Circumpolar Star Collection is a series of books that consists of one case bound storybook, two maps, and a pop-up book. The collection is encased in a copper box designed, etched, and assembled by hand. The books are titled Moon, Mars, Stars, and Earth. The book Mars features a map of the planet Mars with notes and facts surrounding the image, written in a style inspired by the notebooks of famous astronomers such as Galileo and Newton. Stars is a double sided map of the night sky which shows the locations of the stars on one side and illustrations of constellations on the other. Earth is a pop-up book of various spacecrafts, intended to show how humans have explored the universe. The final book, Moon, is hand illustrated and styled after woodcuts. The text and story is from the lyrics of Shawn James’ song “The Thief and the Moon,” and tells a story of the Moon’s power. The box the books are housed in features images of astrological symbols, a diagram of a telescope, and important constellations. As a set the books are intended as a celebration of space exploration and as an homage to the beauty and complexities of the cosmos. As a designer the series allowed me to experiment with various styles of bookbinding, illustration, and construction.
